Indigenous North Suntreso Club

MDGs-extreme poverty, education, environmental sustainability

About Us

Indigenous North Suntreso Club works with a broad set of efforts to improve the lives of people from the Kumasi community in central Ghana. Projects include an agricultural tree planting initiative, an educational youth project that encompasses technical and business skills, and a crime prevention program through awareness and community advocacy. The goal of fostering community involvement and progress began as twenty residents came together for change, meeting to educate themselves in health, environmental, educational, and cultural developments. A registered Non-Governmental Organization, we work in Twi and English.

Our Community

The North Suntreso estate outside Kumasi in Ashanti was built in the 1960s. Government initiatives in the 1970s encouraged residents to feed themselves, by growing food on their lots, boosting development and independence. This progress was squelched by massive drought and economic downturn, which brought high levels of poverty and unemployment to Suntreso and Kumasi. Since this date, the community is still not functioning at its fullest potential, but is learning to work together with open clubs such as ours. Suntreso, which means river, also is suffering from environmental degradation, which needs to be challenged in order to preserve the forests and water that exist in the area.

History

Started in 1990 through a collection of 20 locals, we now exist to reach over 2,000 people in our community with our health, education, environment, and crime preventative measures. The growth has been steadfast, enhanced by international volunteers and support for our vision. Our main projects have grown steadily throughout the past two decades, but so have our needs.
