MemiCare Project
MDGs- Extreme poverty reduction, Environmental sustainability
About Us
MemiCare Project is an agricultural and environmental support-focused organization based in Zambia. We work hands-on with farmers in numerous rural communities in the Copper-belt and central provinces, responding to the loss of breadwinners in families due to AIDS, as well as the lack of practical agricultural training and support. Developing core agricultural skills, training in crop development and modern methods, and are the central routes MemiCare enhances the work of rural farming communities. Providing entrepreneurial strategies including provision of new seeds, fertilizing techniques, and young chicks and goats to communities is a practical method sought to give farmers and their families a hand up, not a handout.
Our Community
The farmers we work alongside exist in both rural and semi-rural communities. These communities are tight knit, though they experience poverty, lack of education, climate fluctuations, and health crises more severely than the surrounding mine and town communities in Northwestern Zambia. Though the challenges on these communities is great, and with having less support systems than urban areas, the strong community spirit and hard work ethic make them a powerful entity. Primary crops include cassava, maize, beans, and fruit.
History
In 2005, while working with HIV sensitization programs in rural areas, Obie Tembo and a team of colleagues saw the need for practical support for families losing members to the AIDS crisis. MemiCare was started and registered and began providing education and practical environmental and agricultural support to farmers in rural communities in all outlaying areas from their home office in Ndola. Even as a young organization we currently partner with 289 families, the number and impact ever continuing to grow.
