About Us

The Nafula Foundation serves vulnerable families and orphaned children living in Western Kenya. Former SpanAfrica volunteer Kathryn Nelson and Kenyan community worker Daniel Makecho founded the organization in 2007 after witnessing the extreme needs of the local community. The Nafula Foundation primarily works in the village of Chebukwa, Kenya.

Our Community

The rural village of Chebukwa, Kenya is deeply impoverished, lacking sanitation facilities, access to clean water, electricity, housing or basic healthcare. Hundreds of orphaned children live in Chebukwa, many whose parents died of malaria and HIV/AIDS. There is also a Primary and Secondary school in the village as well as a church, which was established by Daniel in 2001.

History

In 2007, Kathryn and Daniel established the Nafula Foundation and have since raised $25,000 to benefit the community. In the last four years, the Foundation has purchased communal livestock to serve malnourished families and orphans, installed three rainwater-harvesting tanks to provide clean water to citizens, coordinated a micro-financing program for women and established awareness campaigns about basic health care.
