Education Niche

Focuses on support and training of teachers, development of curriculum and programs, as well as involvement with children ranging from early childhood education, primary, high school, to adult training.

The 2nd Millennium Development Goal is to achieve universal primary education. MDG 2 aims to make sure that children everywhere in the world, boys and girls alike, will be able to go to and complete primary school education. Education gives a person a better chance of employment and thus a better financial situation. This is one path out of poverty.

Education in Africa

-74% of children in sub-Saharan Africa enroll in primary school
-Children from rural and/or poor families are less likely to enroll in primary school when compared to children from urban and/or wealthier families

Education is not an option for all kids in Africa. While it is key for the development of a state, this is a critical sector needing support. Beyond general limitations, education in traditional settings tends to follow the educational strategies remaining from colonial times. Focus on rote memorization, corporal punishment, and a lack of developing practical critical thinking skills in students is a challenge needing addressing. There is incredible potential for the education system, with students being some of the most enthused, dedicated, and hard working you’ll come across.

Volunteering with Education Programs & Services

Volunteering in one of SpanAfrica’s partner education programs and services covers a broad scope of places for involvement. From co-teaching from kindergarten, primary, secondary, and adult courses, other volunteers focus on curriculum development, teacher training, and managing extra-curricular programs, events, and projects.

For volunteers, it is valuable to have experience in teaching or working with youth. Formal teaching qualifications are not required depending on the Grassroots Partner.
